"Mausolea and Memorials to the dead in Ireland" a lecture by Dr Finbar McCormick
In Maudlins burial ground, Naas, there are two fine stone pyramids in need of conservation and the Follies Trust is working with the Select Vestry and the local community to raise awareness of these interesting structures and the need for their conservation.
The cost of restoration is quite steep and the Follies Trust has already secured financial support from two trusts and has submitted an application for a grant under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme. To further support the effort, a lecture was held in St David’s Church, Naas, on Thursday 30th January, at which attendees were invited to give donations. The lecture was given by Andrew Tierney on Pyramids and follies in Central Leinster, which provided some insight into the origins of pyramids and associated place names as well as a closer look at the history and construction of the two pyramids in Maudlins. The lecture was extremely well attended, with over 100 people greatly enjoying a most engaging talk.
A 2nd lecture in support of this conservation effort will be held in March:
Thursday 12th March 2020, 7:30pm
