"Pyramids and follies in Central Leinster" a lecture by Andrew Tierney, 30th January 2020
The first Follies Trust lecture of 2020 will be held in St David’s Church, Naas, on Thursday 30th January, with a reception at 7:30pm, followed by the lecture at 8pm.
Andrew Tierney will give a lecture on Pyramids and follies in Central Leinster.
In Maudlins burial ground, Naas, there are two fine stone pyramids in need of conservation and the Follies Trust is working with the Select Vestry and the local community to raise awareness of these interesting structures and the need for their conservation.
David Winpenny in his publication of Pyramids of Britain and Ireland points out that nowhere else in these islands are there two pyramids in such close proximity. ‘Naas is unique’, he says.
The Historic Graves website provides photographs and inscriptions of the various monuments in Maudlins, including these pyramid mausolea: https://historicgraves.com/graveyard/maudlins/kd-mdln
Information about the Follies Trust can be found on their website: https://follies-trust.org/
There is no charge for the lecture, however donations to the Follies Trust for the conservation of the pyramids would be most welcome. If you cannot attend but would like to donate please send a cheque to
Dr Robert Logan, Hon Treasurer, the Follies Trust, 19 Pineview Court, Gilford, Co. Armagh BT63 6AY.
